Trees, deciduous. Leaves alternate, imparipinnately or paripinnately compound; leaflets alternate, blade margin entire. Flowers bisexual, in axillary to terminal panicles or thyrses. Calyx short, 4- or 5-lobed. Petals 4 or 5, free, contorted. Stamens 10, monoadelphous, staminal tube cylindric, slightly shorter than petals, apical margin entire or 10-crenate or lobed, each lobe bearing 1 anther; anthers exserted. Disc absent to narrowly cushion-shaped below the ovary. Ovary 3-5-locular with numerous ovules per loculus, biseriate; style thick; stigma capitate. Fruit a septicidal capsule, 3-5-locular, with 60-100 seeds per locule. Seeds flat, terminally winged. Seeds endospermic.

A large deciduous tree, up to 25 m tall. Young branches reddish-brown, pubescent with pale lenticels. Leaves alternate, unipinnately paripinnately or bipinnately compound, 30-80 cm long; petiole cylindric, 4.5-11 cm long, base pulvinate; leaflets/pinnae 10-24, alternate, petiolules 4-13 mm long; pinnae up to 25 cm long, imparipinnate, up to with 5 leaflets; leaflet blades ovate-lanceolate, 6-20 cm x 4-8 cm, papery, base oblique, margin entire, apex acuminate, both surfaces pubescent; rachis, petiole and petiolules silky pubescent or puberulent; secondary veins (7-)10-15 on each side of midvein, abaxially prominent. Inflorescence axillary to subterminal panicles or thyrses, panicles lax and nearly half as long as leaf length, glabrous or subglabrous; peduncle short; bracts linear, caducous. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, 5-merous, hypogynous, ca. 1.5 cm long, and 2.5-3 cm across; pedicels ca. 4 mm long, articulate. Calyx ca. 2 mm long, cupulate; tube ca. 1.5 mm ling, limb 5-lobed, lobes shallow, 0.5 mm long, triangular, yellowish green. Petals 5, free, cream to yellowish-green, oblong to spatulate, with median costa, 12-16 mm x 0.5-0.6 mm, puberulent outside. Stamens 10, monoadelphous, staminal tube cylindric, shorter than petals, ca. 1.2 cm x 0.5-0.6 cm, glabrous, apex truncate, 10-toothed or lobed, each lobe bearing 1 anther, anthers oblong, 1 mm x 0.5 mm, exserted. Short disc below the ovary. Ovary elongate, ca. 7 mm x 3 mm, covered with trichomes, 3-5-loculed, many ovules per loculus, biseriate; style cylindric, short, ca. 3 mm long, thick, covered with trichomes; stigma as high as anthers, capitate, apically 3- lobed. Fruit a capsule, yellowish grey to brown, subglobose to oblong, ca. 4.5 cm x 3.5-4 cm, usually 3-valved, woody, surface verrucose, many-seeded, 60-100 seeds per locule. Seeds flat, oblong, ca. 3 mm x 0.5 mm, broadly winged.
